Waste Picker Landscape Report

“First ever comprehensive report on Landscape of Waste Pickers in Pakistan, delving into the challenges, prospects, and organizational strategies of waste pickers. Without this knowledge, meaningful collaboration with waste pickers is limited.”

Ouroboros (WM) completed its long-awaited project “Mapping the Landscape of Waste Pickers in Pakistan” alongside KSBL shedding light on Challenges, Opportunities and Organizational Strategies.

The “Mapping of Waste Pickers” project led by Ouroboros, with support from the Circular Plastic Institute, has made significant strides in understanding the waste-picking community in Pakistan. By highlighting their socio-economic conditions and contributions to the circular economy, the project has paved the way for inclusive and sustainable waste management practices in the country.

The project developed a comprehensive understanding of the socio-economic conditions of waste pickers, their contributions to the circular economy, and the challenges they face. By supporting these unsung heroes, the project provided opportunities for improvement and empowerment in the informal workforce sector, ultimately contributing to a more efficient and sustainable waste management system in Pakistan.

Unsung Heroes

“The research, commissioned by the International Alliance of Waste Pickers and WIEGO - Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO), was undertaken by Ouroboros and supported by the Circular Plastic Institute (CPI) at KSBL.”
The project findings and results were presented by the Ministry of Climate Change Delegation, at the International Alliance of Waste Pickers organized event on a ‘Just Transition’ at the INC-3 in Nairobi, Kenya in November 2023.

Milestone for Informal Sector
The project has been a milestone we have envisioned for over a decade, yet only a small contribution to our goal of serving as a bridge between the informal and formal sectors and providing a voice to the voiceless. The study sheds light on coping mechanisms, family involvement, and kinship connections vital for waste pickers' survival and success.

Milestone for Pakistan
Their entrepreneurial skills and self-organization, often built on trust, play a key role in daily operations - particularly focusing on the challenges and opportunities associated with improving the livelihood and quality of life for waste pickers. One of the key aspects we are focusing on is the integration of a social protection scheme. Recognizing these nuances is crucial for shaping sustainable waste management policies and circular economy strategies.
